Delete an 'undeletable' file in Windows

  • Open a Command Prompt window (Start > Run > type "cmd" ).
  • Close all open programs - leave only the command prompt window open.
  • Next,click Start > Run and enter taskmgr.exe to launch Task Manager.
  • Go to the 'Processes' tab and select Explorer.exe from the list and click the 'End Process' Button.Leave the Task Manager open
  • Go back the Command Prompt window and switch to the directory where the undeletable file is located.
  • At the commmand prompt, type DEL filename . filename is the file you wish to delete.
  • Go back to the Task Manager, click 'File > New Task' and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell. (Explorer)
  • Close Task Manager
